Sofia, is a Board-Certified Doctor of Natural Medicine, through the American Naturopathic Medical Association ANMA. She received her Bachelors of Science in Integrative Therapies from Metropolitan State University of Denver, received an Associate’s Degree in Occupational Therapy COTA, is a registered Psychotherapist with the State of Colorado, NLC and has studied with Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes at the Archetypal and Cross-Cultural Studies Institute. She is a Licensed Massage Therapist, LMT, Certified Biofeedback Practitioner CBP, trained in Advanced Auricular Medicine, NADA, Certified Acu-Detox Specialist and is a Clinically Certified Aroma-therapist, CCA. Sofia was raised with the healing traditions of her ancestors from Cubero and Tijeras New Mexico, she continued to learn the healing ways of her ancestors, and Meso American Healing Techniques.
She is a member of The International Collaboration of Indigenous Healers, Curanderos, Sanadores y Shamans which originated in the sacred mountains of the Tepoztlan valley in Mexico, whose goal is to work toward global health, social justice, and planet sustainability. Sofia was invited to present her dissertation Case Study on Auricular and Traditional Mexican Modalities at the Indigenous Mental Health Conference in Cairns Australia in November 2017. Her dissertation was published in November 2017 by the Journal of The American Naturopathic Medical Association.
She is involved in Integrative Therapies Education and building bridges between Allopathic and Traditional Medicine. Sofia is working on a new project providing Culturally Based Care to address the current opioid crisis and chronic pain with focus on health disparities and access to care. She was named as the Expert Curandera in a Pilot Research Project which focused on the Integration of Curanderismo with Primary Care, her partners were Colorado University, Denver Health and Sciences, The University of New Mexico, and The University of Mexico Morelos. She went on to do another Research Study, on the effectiveness of Indigenous Healing Practices and Techniques on Chronic Pain Patients at Denver Health. Her work with patients with chronic health conditions continues and includes training Metropolitan State University Health Department students.
She offers Health Education Classes using a Culturally Based Model to clinical healthcare workers, therapists and underserved communities. She received the Outstanding Woman’s Award for her health education classes in 2010 from Metro State University, Pillar of The Community Award from Denver Health in 2017 and Ambassador Award for outstanding service and dedication to IBEM Students and the profession of Natural Medicine in 2018. Her classes integrate diverse kinds of knowledge on health and recognize the importance of preservation, conservation, and restoration of Traditional Ancestral Knowledge. Her years of teaching have included an Indigenous Wellness Series and Shamanic Practices. She created and teaches a unique form of Reiki, Indigenous Reiki TM, which has been offered in Research Studies as well as in her private practice and community settings. Sofia is a Maestra of the sacred teachings of the Temezcal and is the Madrina for Temezcal Xochitlqueztal. Sofia teaches the sacred postures of Kinam, Mayan Yoga, for use in the Temazcal as well as the Labyrinth teachings of the Meridian-Acupuncture Energy Body and Cosmic Energies of the Nawales that spiral around the Ancient Calendar of the Azteca and Maya.
